Substitute Musicians
The Illinois Symphony Orchestra is now accepting video auditions from qualified applicants for all orchestral instruments for its substitute list.
The Illinois Symphony Orchestra is a per-service regional orchestra. The base rate for the 2026–2027 season is $104 per service. Additional compensation includes travel reimbursement of up to $280 for Masterworks concert cycles and up to $210 for Chamber, Pops, and Education concert cycles. Complimentary housing is also available upon request.
Substitute audition materials should be submitted according to the instructions below. Applicants must already possess documentation authorizing them to work legally in the United States. For foreign nationals, this may include a green card or an F-1 student visa with authorization for Curricular Practical Training (CPT). Successful applicants will be contacted as opportunities arise.
To apply: Please submit a one-page orchestral résumé (PDF format) along with link(s) to video sample(s) of your playing to Jane Schurter, Orchestra Manager, at [email protected].
Application Requirements: Please include three contrasting standard orchestral excerpts and the exposition of a standard concerto (accompaniment not required). The three excerpts must be recorded in one continuous take. All recordings must be unedited, use a stationary camera angle, and have been recorded within the past six months. We strongly recommend recording your selections at the highest possible quality. Wind and brass players wishing to be considered for auxiliary instruments should include three additional excerpts for each auxiliary instrument.
Video Formatting: Videos should be uploaded to either a file-sharing site or YouTube. Please note that videos will be viewed only by the Music Director, Section Principal, and Orchestra Manager and will not be shared.
