Music Scholarships for Students
For music teachers in Springfield, Sangamon County, and Illinois Symphony Orchestra musicians
Five scholarships for orchestral instruments and one scholarship for vocal performance will be awarded. The piano category has been eliminated since piano scholarships are available elsewhere.
Auditions will be held Sunday afternoon, March 10, 2019 at Sacred Heart/Griffin High School, 1225 W. Monroe in Springfield.
Please download the application form and share it with your promising music students in grades 6-12. We hope many will audition for these scholarships to be used either for private music lessons or for summer music camps. Time: Starting at 1:00pm
The following scholarships will be awarded:
- Grades 6 – 12: Orchestral Instruments: five awards
(strings, woodwind, brass or percussion)
1st place $400; 2nd place $350; 3rd place $300;
4th place $250; 5th place $200
- Grades 8 – 12: Vocal (male or female): one $300 award
All awards must be used for lessons or summer music camps.
Auditions are open to all music students in Sangamon County, or students who are members of the Sangamon Valley Youth Symphony, or students whose teachers are Illinois Symphony Orchestra musicians.
Students auditioning should come prepared to play one selection of their own choosing up to 5 minutes in length. Vocal solos must be memorized.
Students must provide their own accompanist, if necessary.
Students must supply 2 complete copies of the music for the judges, including accompaniment. Number the measures of your composition to assist the judges in their comments.
Last year’s first place winner may NOT audition again on the same instrument but must wait one year before entering again with the same instrument.
Contestants will be notified of their audition times by March 9.
Winners are invited to perform at the Central Illinois Young Musicians’ Concert on Sunday, May 5, 2019, at 4:00pm at the First Presbyterian Church in Springfield.
